Makahiki Festival: Saguaro Correctional Center
On November 9, inmates at the Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, Ariz., celebrated the traditional Hawaiian Makahiki festival. The festival runs from late fall to early spring and celebrates Lono, the god of rain and fertility. Seventy-seven percent of Saguaro's inmate population is of Polynesian descent, and for many this was a way reconnect with their roots (or perhaps even connect fwith them or the first time), even while they are many miles away from home. Inmates participated in many cultural traditions during the celebration, including playing the conch shell, singing, dancing and offering items such as sweet potato, fish and taro.
