Canned Food Drive: New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility

New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility conducted a food drive to collect canned food items to donate to their local food bank, St. Vincent de Paul. The staff at New Mexico Women's did a great job in collecting enough items to fill up the back of a pickup truck, even during this difficult time of the year. Great job to the staff at New Mexico Women's, and great teamwork!

Red Rock Correctional Center also honored Veterans Day with their own "Vets Wall" displayed in hall of their facility. The wall featured the Red Rock employee veterans who had served in the armed forces.

Saving Lives: Red Rock Correctional Center

Red Rock held a blood drive on October 21 in a United Blood Services "bloodmobile" brought to the facility. This third annual drive resulted in 25 lifesaving units of blood, which was 114 percent of Red Rock's goal! Correctional counselor Billy Brown, pictured, was just one of the many Red Rock employees who took the time to save a life by donating blood!

Makahiki Festival: Saguaro Correctional Center

On November 9, inmates at the Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, Ariz., celebrated the traditional Hawaiian Makahiki festival. The festival runs from late fall to early spring and celebrates Lono, the god of rain and fertility. Seventy-seven percent of Saguaro's inmate population is of Polynesian descent, and for many this was a way reconnect with their roots (or perhaps even connect fwith them or the first time), even while they are many miles away from home. Inmates participated in many cultural traditions during the celebration, including playing the conch shell, singing, dancing and offering items such as sweet potato, fish and taro.

Honoring our Veterans: South Central Correctional Facility

In honor of Veterans Day, South Central held a staff recall on November 10. Special thanks go to Bruce Woods, Ronnie Burks, Scotty Peeler, Trinity Waters, Gina Gonzales and Shannon Boyd for assisting with the recall meetings, especially this one honoring our veterans.

Employees donated everything for the fundraiser, from food to utensils, and sold hot dogs, sausages, chips, chili and coleslaw, as well as desserts such as cookies, cakes and pies and, of course, pink lemonade to support the cause. The event raised more than $600 for the Stewart County Relay for Life.
