Corrections: The Diamond in the ruff in Law Enforcement

by Tina Hodge, Quality Assurance Manager, Gadsden Correctional Facility

Tina Hodge - QA Mgr Gadsden Voices

As we all know Corrections is the long forgotten branch of Law Enforcement. Police Officers are always in the public eye for their heroic performances in the line of duty but the staff working in the correctional facilities perform heroics on a daily basic that go un-noticed.

On any given day and time you can turn your TV to the news and see where countless officers are daily recognized for their heroism for saving someone's life, preventing kidnappings, busting up drug rings, catching burglars, and much more, but you never hear of the heroics of the correctional staff. Can you even think of one time you turned on the news or read in the news paper one of these headlines?

Correctional Officers uncover plans of several high risk inmates to escape. Their hard work saved many innocent lives in the local community and countless tax payer dollars in recapture efforts. If not for their watchful eye and attention to detail this could have been a serious incident.

Medical staff's quick response to a call for medical assistance saved an inmate's life that was suffering from a near fatal heart attack. His family was so grateful for the life saving maneuvers performed by the well trained and dedicated medical staff in saving the life of their loved one.

Educational staff has worked hard with mentally challenged inmates this year and were able to assist them in obtaining a GED. These offenders have been able to achieve a goal with the assistance of these dedicated staff members they thought they could never obtain. This department was able to assist the local education efforts in ways that would never have been reached in the local community.

The dedicated maintenance staff at the local correctional facility volunteered to assist the local City Public Works department when it encountered a large break in the main water line that supplies the city with water. If not for their assistance the city would have been without water for several days due to low staffing and short supplies on parts.

The Food Service Department supplies much needed food to local school when the lunchroom caught on fire last week. If not for the donated food and the staff and inmates hard work to prepare this food for the children at the school the school would have had to close its doors and suspend classes for quite a while.

This is just a few of the daily routines that go un-noticed by the general public and the news media. They are quick to jump on the bad events but they seldom if ever recognize the dedication these well trained, hard working and proud professionals do everyday.

This is the one time of the year that we can give recognition and say thank you to the staff working in this very hard and dangerous occupation. We stand tall and proud as we serve in this duty driven and community service environment. One family one mission.

Thanks to all the correctional professionals on a job well done.
