Transforming GED Testing at CCA
Starting in 2014, CCA educators plan to transform how they deliver GED testing to inmates – and they're already preparing for the changes ahead.
Currently, students at CCA facilities take paper-and-pencil exams, but within a couple of years, the test is expected to be completely computer-based. Although electronic tests are already being offered in some settings, this transition at CCA is part of a national shift in the way GED testing is administered.
In May, the GED Testing Service launched a new approach to testing, known as the GED 21st Century Initiative, which aims to ensure that more adult learners are prepared for post-secondary education and careers. As part of this initiative, testing across the country is becoming computer-based.
"With pencil-and-paper testing, there are many challenges to GED test administration in a correctional facility," explains Tom Shaw, CCA director, Educational Services. "For example, many GED test examiners require a minimum number of qualified offenders before scheduling a GED test. It is expected that computer-based testing will give our facilities more flexibility to offer the GED to offenders on-demand. Also, giving more adult learners exposure to computers promotes digital literacy."
This summer, Sue Jackson, director, Marketing Development, Government & Military at Pearson VUE, and Nicole Chestang, executive vice president, GED Testing Service, met with members of CCA's Inmate Programs and Technology departments at the Facility Support Center – CCA's national headquarters in Nashville, Tenn. – to discuss changes in the testing process and strengthen their professional relationship. In July, education professionals throughout CCA participated in training led by Jackson, Chestang and Dr. Steve Steurer, executive director, National Education, at the GED Testing Service. The training was held specifically for CCA facilities and provided an overview of anticipated GED testing changes, and the resulting benefits.
"Because we're working directly with GED Testing Service leaders, we're bringing the newest and best information to our education professionals," Shaw says.
