Unsung Heroes: Donald Bell, Robert Wohlitka and George Covino

by Deborah Nelson, Citrus County Detention Facility

George Covino: Heroes

George Covino, Transport Officer

Sometimes we find that doing ordinary, average, everyday acts can elevate us to "hero" status. Sometimes it's the unspoken words or gestures that set us apart if only for one day.

On January 20, 2009, our facility lost a very special employee. In fact, we lost two very special people on the same day. When news came that our dear friend and Training Manager Donald Bell had lost his long battle with cancer we were immediately and keenly aware of how hard this man fought to continue the life he loved so much. He never complained or looked for sympathy regarding his illness. He was at work every day with a smile and a joke until his body would no longer allow him to be. Even from his hospital bed, he would do his best to put his family and friends at ease with a good story and a laugh.

To many who knew him and those who loved him, he is truly the unsung hero.

Later the same day, we were totally grief stricken with news that another co-worker and friend had been killed in an automobile accident, Transport Officer Robert Wohlitka aka "Wally". He had been traveling home to his loving wife as he had done for so many years at CCDF. Wally's wife was totally unprepared to deal with the death of her husband and without a moment's hesitation his supervisor and best friend, Transport Supervisor George Covino stepped in and handled all the arrangements for Wally's memorial service. He kept vigil with Irene (Wally's wife) and was by her side when she needed support. It was George who gave the eulogy at Bob's memorial service and his words helped all of us deal a little better with this tragedy.

Wally was also one of those people who put a smile on your face and made you look forward to seeing him each morning. He did his job with a style that no one will ever duplicate. To many, he was another unsung hero.

George lost two of his closest friends that day and without fanfare or glory he did what needed to be done for their families and for us. He was the hero we needed to survive a very sad day.

We are blessed to have an abundance of wonderful employees in Citrus County, but the hero status truly belongs to these three gentlemen. We will always be grateful for them and remember what each of them did individually and collectively for this facility.
